here we grow

I think of gardening every Spring when the people in my neighborhood fire up their edgers and mowers and arrive home with flats of veggie starts. But, I've always felt that I was too busy. I'm completely comfortable with the idea that while I Could "do it all" if I really tried, I could not "do it all" with excellence.  Therefore, the gardening urge comes, then very quickly goes, leaving the gardening to those who know what they're doing. I, on the other hand, don't know how to garden and haven't the time and energy to learn to do it well. In fact, on several occasions I've excused myself by saying that I'm growing three children, I don't need to grow anything else.

Being a good home cook, I've grown herbs in planters to use in my kitchen. We've had hanging baskets with lovely, cascading flowers on the front porch years back. We've done tomatoes a few times. But, that's the extent of my garden experience.

This Spring is different. I am not as busy. In fact, it's the first time in years that I don't have an underlying sense of being overwhelmed. Life has a slower pace these days. The kids are getting older. They still need me but in different ways now. I am adjusting and even with part-time school, I have some free time.

I am a project girl and I do things the all or nothing way. So, the garden is my new project. We don't have extra money these days so I am on the cheap and DIY garden plan.

So, here we grow!
